Security Officer in Mall

Today the movie  debuts in theaters nationwide. It may be a movie that’s intended to make you laugh, but in reality security is a serious business for the thousands of security professionals assigned to malls and shopping centers across the country. As the challenges of today’s society continually evolve, so does the need for a security officer who not only protects the public from obvious dangers, but can also proactively monitor and detect suspicious behavior that could become a serious threat. An effective retail security strategy includes highly-trained professionals who are committed to reducing crime through prevention and deterrence, as well as engaging in continual communication to assist the public.

More than just security, the role of security professionals at a retail center include functions that you may not have thought of:

  • Goodwill ambassador—Promote a safe and inviting shopping center environment and experience through patrols, as well as greeting and assisting customers, visitors and tenants with courteous interactions and service.

  • Safety officer—Observe and report property incidents and hazards that could potentially cause injuries.

  • Emergency responder—Assist the wellbeing of people and property by detecting the need for and summoning medical aid or law enforcement agencies. Administering CPR and first aid when needed.

  • Risk mitigator—Monitor and secure access points, manage after-hours entries and respond to alarms.

  • Extension of management—Notify management of violations of property rules and agreements.

  • Family reuniter—Provide aid to a child or elderly person who has been separated from his/her parent or guardian is a common occurrence at a mall. Security professionals are often the catalyst for reuniting individuals, while exhibiting compassion and patience in these types of situations.

Effective uniformed security services at a shopping mall require more than a visible presence. Equipped with advanced technology, such as the latest hand-held reporting and tracking devices, video monitoring capability, and more, security professionals are pre-emptive and responsive, with the skills needed to think quickly and execute critical decisions during high-stress situations. Extensive security training involves developing strong communication skills and having a well-practiced emergency response, with ongoing education to ensure the latest safety and security techniques are always in place.

Security professionals undergo shopping center specific training, gaining specialized expertise to better protect the public in the unique environment of a retail center. When it comes to security and public safety at a mall, professionalism and experience are crucial, and security providers deliver every time with real people, not actors. Sorry, no room for Paul Blart on this team of serious, committed professionals.
